Fave Verses Friday Five

Twenty years ago, I was on a Pastoral Search Committee, and one of the questions we asked the ten candidates we interviewed in the first round was to tell us their three favorite passages of scripture. I loved hearing the variety of verses quoted and even learned some that I didn't know, such as the last line of one of this week's lectionary passages:

He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8)

For today's Friday Five, list your five favorite passages/verses from the Bible and tell us something about why you love them.
If you play the Friday Five at your blog and would like visitors, be sure to share a link here, using the following formulation:

  4. And I can't resist a little story: When I went to the Presbytery meeting in the summer of 2009 seeking to become a candidate for ministry, 3 of the 4 questions I received reflected the questioner's priorities, rather than any interest in finding out who I am. One man, for instance, asked what I make of the verse "Many are called," but few are chosen." It seemed to me that the appropriate question would have been the one here: What are some passages that mean a great deal to you? (His question, btw, was ruled out of order, as being theological (not permitted at that point in the process) despite his attempt to pose it as a question about call.)

  11. Wow, SB, this one really got me thinking....and here are a few of my favorite things ... biblical verses that is.

I picked the first few that came to mind, and most of them are from Matthew, which is my favorite gospel...but I have more, which actually surprised me--how many I started coming up with.
