God of Life and Love, God of Freedom, hear this prayer tonight. As the fireworks crackle outside my window tonight in celebration of Canada Day, I am aware of how very blessed I am to live in this place at this time. I have the freedom to speak my mind, to criticize or support a democratically elected government, and to move about freely in relative safety. I pray tonight for those who are not so blessed. For those who live in fear that they, or their loved ones, will be arrested and taken away without cause. For those whose loved ones have been taken away and will not return.

I pray for children who have known only war, hunger and fear; and for women who are oppressed and abused in radically patriarchal cultures; and for all who are marginalized and harmed by political regimes who operate in the shadow of death.

As the brief and colourful abandon of fireworks in Canada and the US brighten our skies this weekend, let the freedom they represent remind us of the rich blessings you bring to us. May our hearts yearn for freedom for all of your people upon the earth. May each of us be agents of your love, your peace, and your justice. Amen.
