Seeds of Hope Garden

Today’s Mission Moment was submitted by our fellow RevGalBlogPal blogger, Brother Terry. His small (35 member) congregation in Cash, Arkansas established the “Seeds of Hope” garden in an 8,000 square foot plot of land behind his home. The project is unique because the produce is shared with everyone in the community, regardless of their financial status.

You can read more about Seeds of Hope here.

Brother Terry wrote this message about the garden:

"Not long after I answered the call to preach in Cash, the Lord put a burden on my heart to reach out to those in our community who are trapped in poverty. I began to research the subject and discovered that Generational Rural Poverty like we have in this area can only be defeated with a holistic approach. Monetary resources, medical care, education and hope are all ingredients in the recipe. Good nutrition is a prime ingredient. In the developing world, poverty is symbolized by starving children, in the rural South, it's obese kids. The poorer the family, the poorer the nutrition.

We began our "Seeds of Hope" garden as an effort to supplement people's diets and to educate them on how fresh fruits and vegetables are easy to prepare and good tasting.

It has been a wonderful blessing."

  1. Excellent idea--one of our Friendship Centre is running a program like that. I would suggest also a community kitchen. If you can't grow it, at least cook it and serve it. And involve the clients in the cooking and serving.

  2. That is such a neat idea. It really allows for communal ownership -- something that everyone can help with and reap the benefits from!

  3. Yea, Terry you did send it in! I really think this is a great idea. Now to talk my people into it, we have some property also we could set aside for it.
