Wednesday Festival: The Three R's

In the northern hemisphere, summer is coming (or if you live where I do, it's already here!) With kids getting out of school, the mind always seems to go to thoughts of VACATION.

Considering this, please share in the comments your hopes and plans for Rest, Relaxation, and Renewal in the months to come. Even if you don't have vacation coming up, even if it's not summer in your area, perhaps you will get some ideas. A day-trip can be a big help!

  1. I'm taking a week of vacation, or staycation as it would be more properly known.

Because I have MANY projects and "should-do's" here at home, which can render a staycation a real FRUSTRATION, I plan to take our tiny pop-up camper to a nearby lake and spend a couple of days with the dogs in peace and quiet, with a book, some art supplies, and myself.

  2. Mary Beth the pop-up at the lake sounds wonderful! Enjoy!

This month is going to be crazy as I'll essentially be gone for the first 2 weeks--Annual Conference in Springfield, MO and then a week of writing and studying in Collegville, MN.

To round it all out I've taken on the NaBloPoMo June challenge to write everyday. We'll see if I can actually do it this time!

  3. This is half term break in the UK, which means that after lots of dry sunny weather (it's exam season for schools and universities) it's currently cool & damp. This is irritating as we had planned to spend a couple of days on the narrow-boat - but we'll be heading there for a fortnight come school holidays at the end of July - by which stage I may well be completely wiped out, but we'll hope not!

  4. Am off to that 'most perfect school of Christ since the apostles' [Geneva] next week for 4 days - sort of workish, but such a change of scene that I am very excited.
Otherwise, I am a dullard and will stay at home and focus a little more on the thesis now church placement has come to an end.

  5. I just came back from a fabulous long weekend on Catalina with our annual parish community camp; however, the last few weeks of school for the kids are rapidly eating up the sense of peace I felt :-o I think any summer vacationing will be overnight or day trips; maybe I'll dig up a tourist guide to my own town to look for some fun spots!

  6. I love the picture of the porch! I have porch at my current rectory--just need the chairs.

Summer has finally arrived in New England, but my vacation isn't until August when I have four weeks off. I will spend some time in Vermont with my grandchildren and in Maine with friends. I'm looking forward to it, but otoh, I don't want summer to go by TOO fast.

And to mix things up a bit I'm taking two week-long classes in church music at a nearby seminary beginning next week. That should be fun! I hope!

  7. I snatched an almost-week between the past two Sundays, and came back to find that the water-heater pop-off valve in our part-time manse had stuck open at some time during the week and had been running hot water into the cellar ever since. When we opened the windows to try to dry up the cellar, the furnace pilot blew out and refused to be relighted. (This at 9,000 feet where it's still coooooooold!)

And, at our Memorial Day cemetery ceremony, one of the Legion honor guard stepped on a snake and the entire event descended into chaos marked by ancient veterans screaming and running with guns.

But, in between was a Sunday-morning commissioning service for our one high-school grad, and the Spirit was palpably present, so it's all good. I just am not likely to risk a vacation any time soon!

  10. LOL...I've been "resting and relaxing" for 10 months now....and am ready to go back to work, if only I could find that elusive next call....sigh...ok. ok. I KNOW I MOVED across county and that much of the last 4 months has NOT been relaxing - but it all beats the two years prior... so, my summer is job searching and hopefully job finding.

  11. Suzy, blessings on you. Having done many funerals with military honor guards, some by volunteer retired veterans, I can all too well imagine the chaos of your Memorial Day with the snake. And I don't blame you for wanting to hold off on being away, for a while. My plans include working full-time with hospice, part time with a church and squeezing in two weeks for getting away (one week with my wife's family.) Perhaps becoming more intentional with daily offices will allow for nurturing the three "R's".

  12. I just took 2 &1/2 days off all together and feel pretty good about it. Vacation isn't until August and that's just a few days at the beach with a friend and a few days at home. Family vacation is the end of Sept in FLA.
THese last two days were needed tho. I used to take a spring vacation and I was feeling really worn out. Rest is a good thing!
