Advent Preview--Partners in Prayer

What are you planning for Advent this year?

One of our ring members, Lia Scholl (aka Rogue Reverend), is the author of an Advent Devotional, Partners in Prayer 2011.

It's a great and inexpensive resource, available to order from Chalice Press both in paper form and as an E-PDF, with discounts if you are buying it in bulk for a group or your congregation.

Please use the comments to share what you're doing for Advent. Will you light a wreath? Hold a retreat? Use a devotional resource?

Will you preach a sermon series, explore the themes we associate with the Advent wreath (Hope, Peace, Joy, Love), or stick with the lectionary?

And what about your personal practices? Are you able to maintain or add to them during this busy season of the church year?

The comments are open for conversation about Advent plans.

  1. How cool to learn the Chalice Devotional is authored by a ring member! We just received our big order after having very favorably reviewed the single copy we'd ordered. It's fantastic. Accessible, challenging, theologically appropriate... Congrats to the rogue rev!

  2. Thank you so much, Katherine! You're the first person I know who has looked at it. You made my day!

  3. I'm especially happy that it is offered in E-pub format as that will be most useful to me, and the postage cost was going to be about twice the cost of the printed booklet. :) Looking forward to it!!

  4. This looks great! I just ordered the pdf version and look forward to getting it!

As for what we're doing in Advent, we've decided to go off lectionary (the first time I've ever done that at a high holy time of year). It was my co-pastor/husband's idea. We are going to preach from carols/hymns and I'm excited about it:
    Advent 1 - Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming
Advent 2 - People, Look East
Advent 3 - O Little Town of Bethlehem
    Advent 4 - Away in a Manger
    Christmas Day - Silent Night

I'm excited to try something different, and anxious to see how it goes!

  5. I am reusing/reworking a theme I developed 3 years ago (in a different congregation). Be Not Afraid

    A1 -- a new world is coming
A2 -- prophetic peace be with you
A3 -- justice shall be done
    A4 -- sing for joy
Dec 24 -- the baby means change
