After lots of rain and high temperatures, the flea population has mushroomed in Corpus Christi, TX, more specifically in our home! We have three dogs and one indoor cat, who have had their monthly flea treatments to no avail. Unfortunately, my female body is the one the fleas love to bite. So as you are reading this FF, our pets and ourselves will be gone from the house for 3-4 hours, after a pest company sprays all the floors.
With fleas on my mind and on my body, here is an insect-ious Friday Five:
1.What kinds of pests are in your neighborhood or area?
2. Is there a time of year or day that increases their activity? Weather affects their activity or not?
3. Is there any pest that was new to you when you moved to a new location?
4. How do you treat insect bites? Are you allergic to any?
5. Anything else you want to write about connected with insects/pests.
Have fun! If you play, post a comment on this post with a link to your blog!

In Cape Town I am not overwhelmed by pests, but my home country, Zimbabwe, has the most wonderful ones, so I will comment on those.
ReplyDelete1. Flying ants and millipedes (chongololos as we call them)
2. The flying ants fill the air after the first rains. One has to shut doors and windows as they are attracted by the light in their millions. The chongololos are everywhere. They are harmless and one gets used to driving erratically to avoid crushing them and hopping around to avoid stepping on them. It is awful when you step on them and hear a sickening crunch!
3. I haven't found any new ones in Cape Town. Maybe I've just been lucky.
4. Mosquito bites - anti-histamine cream.
5. Flying ants are a local delicacy and are collected in buckets to be fried. Another delicacy is mopani worms - a type of hairy caterpillar. I have been careful all my life to avoid tasting either!
I've never heard of flying ants before. Very interesting!
DeleteI played pesky pests
ReplyDeleteHere in the high desert of New Mexico creepy crawly things mostly creep and crawl. Mosquitoes, though present, are a more an occasional bother and less a regular irritant. Once a year, microscopic bugs fill the air in the bosque (cottonwoods land by the river) where I live. They soon blow away. What is a nuisance and what almost kept us from returning to the Land of Enchantment is the pollen. It is almost year-round. Currently Honeysuckle and Russian Olive Trees are making my eyes water and my nose run. I rely on Allegra and, when it gets really bad, one Benedryl at night. Our neighbors raise bees who make honey which our neighbors devour in a vain attempt to keep from sniffling. I'm sticking with the drugs.
ReplyDeleteSorry about all the pollen. I think I'm afflicted with allergies here in south TX with molds. . . .
DeleteHere's my post! :)

I took on the plague of whatever is current in TX.here
ReplyDeleteThe bugs in South Dakota are the same and yet different from those in Ohio! My musings on thing that creep and crawl.

ReplyDeleteToday my computer wouldn't connect to the internet and then finally I got home--after being away from the "flea spray." Here is my post about insects.
