RevGalBookPals: Summer Roundup

We're well into summer in the Northern Hemisphere and our Southern Hemisphere gals and pals are into winter. Regardless of the season you're experiencing, we can all use some recommendations. Earlier this week, I asked on the RevGals Facebook page what people were reading. Below is that list, in no particular order, but with a slight attempt at organization.

With all book recommendations, as with parables, your mileage may vary (YMMV). One person's beloved War and Peace is another person's @*!&!*^ War and Peace. Still, whether it's summer vacation or winter holiday, browse this list and share what's keeping you up at night in the comments below! There's always more to read!

  1. I own, and hope to read "Still" - am reading "Called to Question" and leading a book discussion group at church on this book. I won but have not read, Fallling Upward. I have read "Take this Bread" it's great, although I got a little tired of it before I was finished - particularly her criticism of her rector versus how profound she thnks she is (sorry, harsh?)...

I've read all of the Narnia series. Other than these, I've never heard of the rest - a lot to check out! thanks.

    1. I struggle with Sara Miles. I sometimes love what she says, but I dislike the fact that she doesn't seem able to accept that more "traditional" church structure does work for and minister to many people. I just re-read Take This Bread for our church book club and I re-visited my indigestion all over again.

    2. Julia, I share your reaction to Sara Miles--the positive and the negative.

  2. Last summer was my Game of Thrones re-read and new volume summer. This year lies wide open ahead of me! I've got Henrietta Lacks on my Kindle, but I'm also planning to read some classic fiction including Dreiser's "An American Tragedy." And I got for about 99 cents a whole bunch of Frances Hodgson Burnett's novels for adults (author of The Secret Garden and A Little Princess) for my Kindle, so that's my fun reading. She wrote some spooky, spiritualist stuff, and I'm looking forward to it. I've also got to find a paperback for my week at the beach. No work reading there!!! And nothing to heavy to hold. I'm open to suggestion.

    1. Oh, An American Tragedy! Let me know what you think. That's one of those books where I haven't yet shook my high school memories in order to read it again.

  3. I just read/LOVED (!!!) Wild by Cheryl Strayed. (but its not in PB, alas, Martha). Watership Down is a usual yearly re-read for me. Maybe that would do for a beach book, if you like that one?

    1. I've been avoiding it for decades, Juniper. I can't stand the idea of sad things happening to rabbits. :-(

    2. Well we all have the lines that we can't cross, but if you can stomach GRRM, I bet you can handle Watership Down. It's way more uplifting than sad imo.

    3. Maybe it's about time, then. :-)
Although I will say, in Tolkien, what upsets me most is anything that happens to ponies.

  4. I just re-read A Prayer for Owen Meany in prep for reading In One Person (both by John Irving). This latest one is BLOWING MY MIND.
    Not shocking...
