RevGal Friday Five: Christmas Music

At the suggestion of St. Casserole a couple of weeks ago, a Christmas-music themed Friday Five (and with apologies to Rebel Without a Pew, who addressed these topics to great acclaim not long ago).

1) If you had to choose CDs as a soundtrack for the Christmas season, what would they be?

2) How do you feel about singing all the verses of "The First Noel?" (Six in our hymnal, but apparently there are nine.)

3) "O, Come All Ye Faithful" has a lot of verses, too. Which is your favorite?

4) What music do you play while opening presents?

5) Which carols do you consider to be Christmas Eve essentials?

and a Bonus Question:

6) What, if any, is your favorite secular Christmas song?

Do the Christmas Eve updater a favor and comment here if you play the Friday Five this week. I'll do my best to come and visit you! And whether or not you play, I wish you a Blessed and Merry Christmas.

  2. will answer here

    Our church often sings many verses in English of certain carols - we English speakers look at each other EVERY TIME -as if to say "we've never heard this before"

    I love Oh come all ye faithful - joyful and triumphant - that is how we are to be as Christians and full of joy of the meaning of Christ and His resurrection!

    We are victors because of Him - do you hear me, victorious!!

    I love this
    Jesus, to Thee be
    All glory giv'n;
    Word of the Father,
    Now in the flesh appearing!

    I love oh little town of Bethlehem, but there are two tunes so it's always controversial do we choose the English or the American version :)

    and as I wrote today I love the Finnish carol Joulu on taas - wish I could find a link so you could actually hear it ...

    right now I'm hearing Joan Osborne's what is God were one of us ? ... rattling in my head - there's some theology there I think, but I blame it on TS as he turned up his mp3 player and I caught that.

    I'm not fond of secular Christmas songs and wouldn't mind if I never heard jingle bells again - though my dad used to sing bingle jells and that always made me laugh!!!

    blessings to you all :)

    I love the five - get to know so much about the Rev Gals and friends :)

  3. oh and I have NEVER heard this verse

    Child, for us sinners poor and in the manger,
    We would embrace Thee, with love and awe;
    Who would not love Thee, loving us so dearly?

    Who indeed?

  5. I still struggle with Christmas music--but I will listen to Happy Christmas/War is over, the original John Lennon and Yoko Ono version, any day. The recent remake is a good try, however...

    I am not the same since I heard the Jingle Cats do Ave Maria.
