Sunday Sacred Music Video - Praise My Soul, The King of Heaven

This is one of my favorite hymns and has a great descant at the end. We sang this today as our processional/entrance hymn. It's always nice when Youtube pulls through to have what you are looking for.

A performance of this famous hymn during the 3-choir festival, during an evensong, at St. Bavo in Haarlem (NL).

There is still time to read Caroline Westerhoff's book Good Fences - The Boundaries of Hospitality, scheduled for discussion on Monday September 24, led by Songbird. And, while you are at it, if you have not read Barbara Kingsolver's Animal, Vegetable, Miracle , you can get a head start for October's read. Kingsolver's book is a bestseller and is readily available through Amazon or through your local bookseller, or check it out at the library! (I did and had it so long I had to return it and buy one for me! -- it's one of those that I want on my bookshelf.)

What did you sing in church today?

  1. Beautiful! I love St. Bavo--both of them actually, though I'm thinking fondly of the organ in the Reformed SB and fondly of liturgy in the RC SB. I'm actually commenting because I'd love to buy October's book and a couple things from my Amazon wish list and in the process give a few $$$ to the RevGals, but could not figure out how to do so last time because it didn't seem possible to remain in the same browser window yet get to any other part of Amazon to do more shopping.

Since you asked, in church this morning I was the traditional organist/pianist for blended worship. Praise Band led "Blessed Be Your Name," "Did You Hear the Mountains Tremble" and "Free to Dance"; speaking of Nederlands, for the organ prelude I played a Toccata in C by Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck and his famous A minor Toccata for the postlude. My special music on the piano was a setting of "Promised Land" from Southern Harmony. Now that I've told you everything you asked for and probably more, I'll be back later to find out about Amazon.

  3. We sang this hymn last week - great hymn! I just love hymns. Certainly not to the exclusion of praise/worship type songs, but there are some hymns (like this one) that just grip me in the gut and I can't help but grin from ear to ear while singing some of them.

In church this morning the choir sang Offertory by John Ness Beck. Our hymns were Come, Holy Spirit, Dwell Among Us; Fight the Good Fight and Holy God We Praise Your Name. We're not in our sanctuary right now (renovations) and so everything is on the piano. i love playing piano, but I MISS THE ORGAN!!! We've been out of the sanctuary and in our dungeon of a social hall since the first of July and I'm really getting homesick for the Moeller organ. Anyway, so the prelude was a Bach piece (piano and violin) and I can't remember the BWV or anything right now, offertory was The Lark Ascending (Vaughan Williams), again violin and piano; and my postlude was Jan Sanborn's piano arrangement of Immortal Invisible.

We had a guest preacher (don't get me started on him... I was not impressed, in fact I was a little pissed). Anyway, and so without knowing a whole lot about what he was going to speak on I went for a well rounded Trinitarian theme on the hymns.

Only two more Sundays in exile and then we're back in the sanctuary. WHOOOHOOO!

  4. Thanks for sharing your hymns for Sunday - some of which I am familiar - others, well maybe I am, but just have to hear them first!

Leah Sophia, on Amazon, as long as you keep shopping logged in and continue shopping, Amazon remembers you are shopping from an RGBP code. Hope that makes sense.

  6. Thanks for asking! We sang:
Praise to the Lord, The Almighy
    O Christ the Word Incarnate
Richard Proulx' arrangement of Amazing Grace...a little bit jazzy!
All People that on Earth Do Dewll
Blessed are they by David Haas
Let Thy Blood in Mercy Poured
    and
All My Hope on God is Founded

    Woot!

  7. We were at our annual Parish Retreat and had Eucharist outside by the lake. We sang "Weave Us Together", "I was there to hear your borning cry" and "Jesus is my Rock and he rolls my blues away" among other things--not our typical musical fare, but perfect for the occasion.

  8. We sang this hymn today as our opening! No fooling!

  9. I distinctly remember finding out my summer greek grade was much better than I expected and then walking across campus to chapel where this was the opening hymn.

"Praise him for his grace and favor to his people in distress" indeed.

  10. Oh, I shouldn't have listened to this! Our young organist lost his grandfather over the weekend and was very fractured yesterday as a result. No blame or anger on our part, but not the most inspring service, either. We sang:
    Oh, Holy Spirit, Enter In
O Day Full of Grace (it's Grundtvig month at Peace for our Hymn of Praise - there are three alternate verses that work very well for this)
    Immortal, Invisible
Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing
    Softly And Tenderly

  11. We sang "I Waited for the Lord" from "Hymn of Praise." Glorious!
