Advent 1 Music Video

I love this beautiful and simple video, with an instrumental setting of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.

We sang three verses of it this morning as our sequence hymn. The introductory notes on the organ made me feel Advent-y (Christmas is coming-y?) for the first time this season.

We also heard
* Hark! A Thrilling Voice is Sounding
* Chorus from Bach's 'Wachet Auf' (four men's voices and the organ) (my DH was one of the voices)
* Humbly I Adore Thee

mmm, wonderfulness!

So, what did you all sing this morning, as Advent began?

  2. I placed a video also - it's an Advent meditation, but different from the one you posted.

Your video seemed to capture the essence of the season - and suspend time. It was beautiful. Thank you, Mary Beth.

  4. Yes, beautiful, Mary Beth. We sang two verses of this today, as our Hymn of Praise. We will sing two more next week, and so on, until the last Sunday of Advent. It's a lovely way for small church to sing this beautiful hymn without it being burdensome.

    love it!

  6. One verse of "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel" accompanied the lighting of the Advent candle (we'll sing a different verse each week); later we sang a verse of "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" and all of "Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates". I was thinking as we sang, I love Christmas carols as much as anyone does--but this is fine with me, I love the Advent hymns too!

  8. We also sang "Lift Up Your Heads, Oh Mighty Gates, and "Lead on Eternal Sovereign" (AKA Lead on Oh King Eternal). We also began singing our Advent hymn, "A Candle is Burning."

"A candle is burning, a flame warm and bright,
A candle of hope in December's dark night.
While angels sing blessings from heaven's starry sky,
Our hearts we prepare now for Jesus is nigh."
(to the tune of "Away in a Manger")

It's from Voices United, the United Church of Canada hymnal--as many of you will know!

  9. I love all of the imagery on this video.. lovely. I wish I could show it to my whole congregation.

We sang Marty Haugen song, Awake, Awake, and greet the New dawn, The King Shall Come, and "He Came Down", which I believe is Caribbean (I'll check it).

  11. It was what I refer to as a "Bad Hymn Day" today. So sad in this season!

  12. i love 'people look east!'

this morning i attended the praise (contemporary) service at the church where i'm leading an advent series; there's no printed bulletin, so aside from the first song i have the impression i missed we sang:

    mary did you know?
    o come o come emmanuel
did you hear the mountains tremble?

  13. We sang:

    Come Thou Long Expected Jesus
People Look East (I got them to learn this last year)
    Sent Forth By God's Blessing

  15. We sang "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," "Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence" and "What Child is This." I have a habit of using a Christmas carol as the closing hymn in Advent, and in this case I liked the contrast between the baby and the Communion table. As part of the Hanging of the Greens, the choir also sang "Lift Up Your Heads" and "Of the Father's Love Begotten."

  16. RP, I love those words! Think I'll borrow 'em in a future week.

We sang O Come O Come Emmanuel

God is WIth Us (a new song with "Emmanuel" theme)

    Shine Jesus Shine

  17. We sang tonight, actually, since we've been doing house mass after dinner recently, then pouring them into their cozy beds. "O Come O Come Emmanuel" for opening, "Soon and Very Soon," with enthusiastic if off beat handclapping for closing, and "Winter Name of God," Michael Joncas' awesome Eucharistic Prayer, which we used to sing at Journey Catholic Community in this season.

  18. Goodness - what didn't we sing?
In the morning we had O come o come Emmanuel, the choir did Ord's Adam lay y-bounden as the Communion anthem and we finished with Lo he comes
(there was other stuff en route, but I've lost track of it now)...at Christingle we sang, among other things, "Christ be our light" and in the evening we had the Palestrina Matin Responsary, Come thou redeemer of the earth, Wachet Auf, Hills of the North, Hark a thrilling voice is sounding, and more and more...We also had the organ preludes "Es ist ein Ros entsprungen" and "Wachet Auf"...so a good time was had by all. Best music of the year I think.
