Sunday Afternoon Video - Coventry Carol

The Coventry Carol is a sixteenth century carol beloved by many. This one is sung by Loreena McKennitt on her A Midwinter Night's Dream album. For many this Sunday and next are the two Sundays where we sing Christmas carols for the church year.

Share with us the hymns you sung or heard this day at worship. Are you hearing Christmas music anywhere else right now in your world other than in church?

  1. We had a violin and piano duet of "For Unto Us a Child is Born" at the preparation of the gifts, which finished as the incensing of the altar finished (no planning - just the Spirit). The notes and the incense swirling up to the dome were a gift and grace....

  2. One of my daughters preached today and referenced Richard Shindell's song, Before You Go. It's on a CD called Wonderland that was put out to benefit Western Mass. foodbanks. Wonderful. We sang Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, What Child is This? and Angels from the Realms of Glory. My other daughter sang a solo of In the Bleak Midwinter, the Holst version. Beautiful! If I do say so myself, and I can't really take much credit for their accomplishments. I have a new Christmas CD, Comfort and Joy Vol. II by Cantus, a great men's chorus, that I'm certainly not done listening to yet! When I get back to Maine on Jan 6, I'll move on to my Epiphany playlist.

  3. Today was Christmas Lessons & Carols from the Book of Occasional Services. We used several well known carols, but I slipped in the Huron Carol (1982 Episcopal Hymnal 114), to which my oldest daughter introduced me a few years ago.

I always get the chills when I hear the Coventry Carol - it's so haunting!
